What Zimmermanns looked like when it first opened as one of the only businesses on Daniel Webster Highway

Like all good stories, the story of Zimmermanns Skis, Boards & More in Nashua, NH begins a long time ago. Many of our longtime customers know about the Olympic heritage of Zimmermanns, but really the story begins long before the shop was founded in 1968. Egon Zimmermann and Gert Hausberger grew up together in Kirchbichl, Austria. Unbeknownst to them when they were growing up, they would one day both move to America and become business partners opening one of the most renowned ski shops in all of New England.

However, before moving to America, Egon Zimmermann competed for the Austrian National Team in the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley, CA. The events he excelled in were Downhill and Giant Slalom. Especially in the Downhill event speed, and speed alone was the name of the game.

While training for the Olympics Egon met his future wife, Penny Pitou, famed American ski racer. Upon first moving to the United States, Egon worked with Penny Pitou heading up the ski school at Gunstock Mountain in Gilford, NH.

Egon’s lifelong friend, Gert Hausberger, came over the mid 1960’s to work with Egon as an instructor at Gunstock which is when they got the idea to open Zimmermanns in 1968. A few years later Gert’s brother, Horst, also moved to New Hampshire and helped run the shop. In 1999 the business was sold to Gert’s son, Stefan. Today, Zimmermanns remains family-owned and has been going strong for 50 years thanks to our strong foundation, rich history, experience, and stellar customer service.
